Julio is the Lead Bioinformatician for Pathogen Program at EIT, where he drives the development and deployment of advanced bioinformatics solutions with a focus on scientific rigor.
He earned his PhD in Cell and Systems Biology from the University of Toronto, studying the evolution of infectious bacterial populations in cystic fibrosis lungs using next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics. Following his PhD, he joined the University of Oxford, first in the Department of Zoology to investigate bacterial infections in European ICUs, and later at the Centre for Genomic Pathogen Surveillance to lead bioinformatics efforts on the AMR.watch project, analysing WHO-priority pathogen genomes.
Julio is passionate about training researchers in bioinformatics and bacterial genomics. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his two daughters and attending live music events.
