Berker Banar

Berker is a researcher working at the intersection of Generative AI, AI for Science and Deep Creative Decision-making for the AI & Robotics Institute at EIT, pushing beyond the boundaries of both utilitarian and aesthetics-related tasks.

He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from Queen Mary University of London in 2025, as part of the Centre for Digital Music (AI & Music CDT). His doctoral research, supervised by Simon Colton, focused on "Composing Contemporary Classical Music Using Generative Deep Learning.", where he enhanced both machine and human creativity by empowering machines for creative decision- making, while also exploring new aesthetics and challenging entrenched practices in deep learning.

Previously, Berker held research internships at Google DeepMind, Sony, and Bose. He also worked as a nanophotonics researcher at the Metamaterials and Nanophotonic Devices Lab at Northwestern University. He holds a BS in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University (Ankara, Turkey) and a BM in Electronic Production and Design from Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA). He was also affiliated with The Alan Turing Institute as an Enrichment Student. Berker has published in leading venues in the field, including AAAI, ICASSP, NeurIPS (workshops), ICLR (workshops), EvoMUSART, and ICCC, as well as in journals such as Machine Intelligence Research, Applied Physics Letters, and Optical Materials Express. During his internship at Bose, he contributed to a patent, leading efforts on using generative deep learning for audio in augmented hearing scenarios. He also co-authored a book chapter on Explainable AI for Arts and Music, published by Taylor & Francis.

His awards include the prestigious Enrichment Community Award from The Alan Turing Institute, the Exceptional Great Work Award from Bose, Outstanding Students of 2022 from EvoMUSART, the IEEE MMSP Top 10% Paper Award, the UKRI CDT in AI and Music Scholarship (QMUL), the Roland Award Endowed Scholarship (Berklee), a Comprehensive (Full) Scholarship from Bilkent University, and the Outstanding Success Scholarship from the Turkish Educational Foundation, awarded for ranking 17th among 1.5 million candidates in the national university entrance exam.

As a musician (drums and electronics), Berker has performed at notable venues including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Harvard University Holden Chapel and Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Berklee Performance Center, Wally’s Jazz Club Boston, Nardis Jazz Club Istanbul and the Istanbul Jazz Festival.
